From Anas ibn Malik radhiallahu `anhu who said that the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam) said to a man : " Oh fulaan did you do such and such ? " the man replied : " No by Allah besides whom there is no God i did not do it " But the messenger of allah sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam already knew that he did that work, so the prophet sallalahu `alayhi wa sallam said : " Allah will forgive your lie (or lying) with (due to) the sincerity of your Laa ilaaha illallah
Status : weak
This narration is found in the following works :
In this narration, Abu Qudamah Harith bin `Ubayd bin Ka`b al-`Adawi though is Hasan ul-hadeeth (but disputed according to some) and he used to make mistakes and in this narration as well, he has mistaken in attributing this narration to Anas ibn Malik because narrators who are more precise and stronger than him such as Hammad bin Salamah have narrated this narration from Thaabit who said he narrated from Ibn `umar (r.a) but Hammad (r.h) clarified that Thabit (r.a) did not hear from Ibn `Umar therefore this is munqati` (disconnected)
Imam Bazzar rahimahullah affirms the same when he said :
Likewise imam Abu Haatim ar raazi r.h said the same that hammad's narration opposed that of Abi qudama and hammad's narration is to be given preference :
Imam al-`Uqayli also says that Abu Qudaamah is not followed/supported in this mistake and another chain has come with a different sanad better than this for this narration :
Imam bayhaqi weakens this narration from thaabit from anas
Ibn Hajar `Asqalani in al-Matalib al-`Aliya bi Zawa'id al-Masanid al-Thamaniya says the same thing summarizing that hammad has opposed the narration brought by hakim in his mustadrak via abi qudama via anas and hammad's narration was from thaabit and he also clarified that thaabit did not hear from ibn umar :
Now, the narration of Hammad bin Salamah is found in the following sources
And this narration of Hammad in `asl is not attributed to Anas bin Malik radhiallahu `anhu , rather to Ibn `Umar radhiallahu `anhu and it is also disconnected because thaabit r.h did not hear from ibn `Umar radhiallahu `anhu
Another such similar narration comes from Ibn `Abbas radhiallahu `anhu and on the account of the apparent correctness of the chain, many scholars including Al-Albaanee and Zubayr `Ali Zaee rahimahullah ajmaeen authenticated it , but that is not the case.
The hadeeth is as follows
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Two men brought their dispute to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) asked the plaintiff to produce evidence, but he had no evidence. So he asked the defendant to swear. He swore " by Allah besides whom there is no god " ." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Yes, you have done it (i.e you are at fault), but you have been forgiven for the sincerity of the statement: "There is no god but Allah."
[Ref: Musnad Ahmad (2956, 2695, 2280) and Sunan Abi Dawood (3275)]
Now apparently this narration seems to be saheeh, however Ataa bin Saa'ib has been criticized due to his Ikhtilaat (deterioration of memory). And Imam adh-Dhahabi rahimahullah has categorized this particular narration of his among his Munkar narrations (See Meezan al-`Itidaal3/72)
Along with this `Ata has committed Idhtiraab in this narration as Imam ash-Shu'bah has also narrated this narration from `Ata but here `Ata is narrating from :
See Sunan al-Kubra lin-Nasa`ee (6005)
therefore this is also mudhtarib and Munkar in nature and for details see the tahkeeq of Musnad Ahmad by Shaykh Shua`aib Arnoout (2280)
Also, content wise if we accept this narration as authentic then it would mean that the Sahaabah of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) used to lie, na'oozubillah, which itself is a lie.
